Jeremiah is sent by the Lord as a prophet to speak against the nations of Northern Israel and Judah. He describes their wickedness of injustice and social oppression and the evil of idolatry that has inundated the land. But there is another problem. A problem that is both a result of Israel’s sinfulness and its root cause. It is the same problem that we fight every day. It is the same problem that we war against every Sunday morning.
It is the problem of taking no joy and pleasure in God’s word. Listen to how God, through Jeremiah, describes the people of Israel’s problem in Jeremiah 6:10: To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised, they cannot listen; behold, the word of the Lord is to them an object of scorn; they take no pleasure in it.
The antithesis of scorning God’s word is taking pleasure in it and vice versa. This means that when the word of God is preached we are either scorning God’s word actively or passively (with our inattention) or we are taking pleasure in it. Make no mistake. What happens Sunday Morning is of the utmost importance. And the most important part of our worship activity is not the offering or our singing it is hearing and taking pleasure in God’s Word.
What activities do you do to help you hear and take pleasure in God’s word?
